3 December – The IEEE Board of Directors has elevated 309 IEEE Senior Members to Fellow grade effective 1 January 2010.
The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.
23 November 2009 – IEEE has launched its first mobile version of the IEEE Xplore digital library. You can now easily perform searches anywhere, anytime of over two million documents via any mobile device with Internet access. IEEE is actively searching for feedback of this new Beta service. Go to http://m.ieeexplore.ieee.org on any internet-enabled mobile device, try the new site, and provide your feedback via the link at the bottom of the Web page.
11 November – The First Humanitarian Technology Challenge (HTC) workshop was held 26-28 October in Washington, D.C., U.S.A. 70 people from 15 countries participated in a series of working sessions focused on defining plans for field tests to address the three selected challenges presented at the June HTC conference, sponsored by IEEE and the United Nations Foundation.
13 October – IEEE, the world's largest technical professional society, today discussed India’s energy scenario and India’s way to self-sufficiency using IEEE’s Power and Energy Society’s (PES) PowerCon 2008 as the backdrop. Experts attending PowerCon 2008 discussed and debated various topics under the theme "Technological advancements for the development of the power sector."
13 October – Pedro Ray, president, Ray Engineers; Old San Juan, Puerto Rico; has been selected as 2009 IEEE president-elect. Pending acceptance of the Teller's Committee report by the IEEE Board of Directors, Ray will begin serving as IEEE president on 1 Jan. 2010. He will succeed 2009 IEEE President John Vig, consultant, System Planning Corporation.
6 October – IEEE recently released several features to its IEEE Xplore® digital library, which powers IEEE online subscriptions for organizations and individuals. Features available through IEEE Xplore 2.5.3 include full-text PDF stamping, full-text PDF banner and integration of medical subject heading (MeSH) terms, all commonly requested by IEEE Xplore customers.
18 September – IEEE the world’s leading professional association for the advancement of technology, will honor Intel veteran Gordon Moore, leading smartphone manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM), and 17 additional global technology leaders during IEEE Honors Ceremony on 20 September 2008 in Quebec City.
President Barack Obama is expected to soon announce his selection for Chief Technology Officer of the U.S., the first time such a role will be filled. The job could have significant implications for the high-tech industry, solution providers say, but warn that it's important to provide the CTO with tools that are up to the task.
Some are even just a bit dubious about the prospect of a nationwide CTO.
